2nd October is celebrated worldwide as Gandhi Jayanti– the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation. Amongst other things, Gandhiji was a strict preacher of non violence. Hence, it is irony of the highest order, that the two movies releasing on his birth anniversary are both violent in nature- ‘Bang Bang’ and ‘Haider’.
Although, people may think that Hrithik is a bigger star than Shahid, but for all obvious reasons, the trailer of Haider proved that Shahid Kapoor will definitely give a tough competition to Hrithik. Whenever Vishal Bharadwaj collaborates with Shahid Kapoor, it results in Shahid’s best performances (remember Kaminey?). That, and the fact that the film’s supporting cast includes veteran actors like Pankaj Kapur, Irrfan Khan, Tabu, and Kay Kay Menon, makes this a must watch for lovers of dark, gritty cinema. Vishal Bharadwaj has his loyal audience. Though his last film was rejected by the cinegoers, he is known for his brand of cinema and has his followers. Besides, he never goes wrong while directing a Shakespearan drama. Cases in point being Maqbool (an adaptation of Macbeth) and Omkara (an adaptation of Othello).
However, Vishal Bharadwaj’s style of film making doesn’t go down too well with the single screen audience. And that’s where the revenues come from. Haider Movie being so niche in genre, might work against it.
On the other hand, Bang Bang looks like a complete crowd puller. It has a genuine A list stars in Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif, and a more mass friendly appeal. The film promises to have loads of action, maar dhaad, songs and dance routine, and a bevy of baddies. In addition to this, the chemistry between Hrithik and Katrina is awesome, as they have already proved in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. The idea of Hrithik Roshan playing a daredevil secret agent is surely a compelling one.
However, the movie is an official remake of the Hollywood blockbuster Knight and Day (2010), which starred Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. Needless to say, even a lot of Indians have already seen that movie, and hence would not want to sit for a re run of the same old rehash.
We quizzed some movie critics on their views on this impending clash. Trade analyst Akshay Rathi informs, “The makers of Haider had announced its release date a year back, while Bang Bang kept on getting delayed and they finally finished the film and decided to release it on October 2. So Haider is at no fault. Also, the two films will have a very different audience base. I don’t think trade will get affected, because people who will watch Haider will not be able to stand Bang Bang Hindi Movie and vice versa. However, UTV and FOX Star Studios are backing the two projects respectively and, therefore, they will make sure that the two films get enough number of screens to release. Haider is more for the classy audience whereas Bang Bang, which is a remake of Knight and Day, will be more for the masala loving single screen audience.”
Trade analyst Komal Nahta however has a different perspective on the same. He informs, “Trade will surely get affected. It is true that both the films have different audience base and will cater to them respectively but there will be a huge chunk of audience who might want to watch both the films. Thus they will be left to choose between the two and that will definitely affect the opening day collections.” We think the Knight (Hrithik) holds all the aces in this battle.
