Some lessons which Priyanka Chopra learn from the ring

Never had I thought that I’d look at boxing something as an analogy for life. But weeks away from the release of one of my most challenging films, Mary Kom, directed by Omung Kumar, all I can think about is how this movie has taught me some of the most very important fundamental learnings in life.

After all, there’s a lot you can learn when you’re standing in that challenging ring, alone and defence less. Like renowned boxer Tex Cobb said, “If you screw up in tennis, it’s 15-love. If you screw up in boxing, it’s your ass, darling!” So here it goes…what I fondly call ‘Lessons From The Ring’ says gorgeous actress Priyanka Chopra.

It’s really hard to defend when someone’s constantly beating you black and blue. And I’m talking about all kinds of knocks — physical, mental and emotional. Mary Kom dealt with all that and that too in style. I told myself everyday that if she could do it, so could I. There were days on the shoot when I felt I couldn’t move another muscle or do another push-up. But at the end of the day, ‘DilYehZiddiHai’..

She explains, “It is Mary’s ziddi dil that gave its wings to this film and I’m looking forward to sharing our journey with her. We have a great event planned to launch the film’s music, along with a few surprises. For me, every song in the album comes together in a way that embodies the spirit of the film.”

Priyanka Chopra has already amazed everyone with her muscular look in the Mary Kom Movie, but there is more much she has in store for the fans.

The actress will be seen going bald in one specific sequence. And she was sure excited for it, Priyanka said, “That is a very authentic scene and I was damn excited for it. I never say never, so was all around the set wearing the bald look. As an actor I feel that it is my duty for the role that I portray, that I do it with complete honesty. It is a personal challenge that I set for myself to portray all my characters differently.”

Mary Kom, produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, releases September 5.

The film ‘Mary Kom‘, which is set for a release on September 5, is a biopic on Olympic bronze medallist and five-time World Champion MC Mary Kom. “The film is the first of its kind being made in Bollywood… I did not think of the film as a risk. Biopics work because it is zero-to-hero story. The emotions run high.. It is a huge pull for anyone. It is not that I made this film after seeing ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’. I had the idea much before it was made,” director Omung said.”I started this film three and half years back before any film on sports (biopic films) was made. We had started researching on Mary Kom. We had spoken to her three and half years back about this project. Then I approached Sanjay Leela Bhansali (producer) and Priyanka Chopra and things fell in place. It may be a trend now,” he added.

She stunned everybody with her game, struggle and victory in the Olympic 2012. She is a five-time World Boxing champion, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships. Her achievement also amazed director Omang Kumar and Bollywood’s diva Priyanka Chopra to make a biopic on the boxer’s life starring Piggie Chops in the lead role.

It is nice to see that Bollywood is making woman-centric films that break the notion that women are not capable of doing certain things. In this case, boxing is a sport that people find hard to associate with the weaker sex. Through this film and the life of Mary Kom, we see that this is wrong and women of today can achieve whatever they wish to pursue with full confidence. Apart from this film, there is another film that promotes this concept. The film Mardaani has also been termed as woman-centric as it has Rani Mukerji in the lead role playing the character of a cop. This film revolves around the fight against female trafficking in the country. Rani character in the film is that of a cop that fights crime single handedly with courage and fearlessness. Although we may call this a woman centric film, Rani Mukerji refuses to believe so. She says that a film is either good or bad and that is is wrong to term a film as woman centric or male centric. Whatever the case, it is a fact that Bollywood is now focusing on making films that show that women are in power and have nothing to fear in fighting for their dreams and fighting against evil.

Mary Kom is set to release in theatres on the 5th of September and is one of the most highly anticipated films of the year. It will be interesting to watch how this film will fare at the box office against Bollywoods previous success with a biopic through the film ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’. It is nice to see Bollywood entering a new genre of film as they experiment with biopics. As far as Mary Kom is concerned, we pretty sure this experiment will bring great results and will turn out to be a commercial hit.
